Christos Υiacoumis: Critical infrastructures use artificial intelligence as their ally

The strategic utilisation of IT, combined with sophisticated cyber security practices, were the main topics discussed by Christos Yiacoumis, Partner, Cybersecurity Services, EY Cyprus in a fireside chat during the 4th Cyber Security Conference.

The fireside chat at the 26 September event in Nicosia was entitled, ‘How can cybersecurity transform to accelerate value from AI? How can critical infrastructures use AI as an ally?’

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising the world of technology. As enterprises and critical infrastructure integrate IT into their strategies, cyber security is coming to play an even more critical role. Now, it is not just a necessary ingredient, but also a critical factor that enhances the value generated by new technologies.

Discussing the issue with Paraskevas Panayi, Membership Director, ISACA Cyprus Chapter, Yiacoumis said that, without the use of AI, the duration from the time of an attack until its detection is six months, a "long period of time," according to him.

With the use of AI, the detection of attacks becomes faster, he emphasised. The presence of IT brought about important developments in various sectors, he added, among them energy infrastructure, health and the provision of financial services.

Presenting relevant research by EY, he also said that "GenAi has the potential to complement traditional artificial intelligence systems in the field of cyber security, while empowering completely new approaches."

The same research showed that internal challenges for organisations include the fact that there are many possible attack layers. In second place, in the responses of the respondents, was the difficulty of finding a balance in the adoption speed of security on the one hand and innovation on the other.

Among the positive findings is the fact that the earlier detection of cyber threats and greater accuracy, due to AI, allows specialists to have more time to deal with other issues that concern the security of their organisation.

Yiacoumis stated that "the appearance of IT is an opportunity for the operation of cyberspace to prove its value to the organisation"

With the adoption of any new technology, vulnerabilities are also created, he reminded, finally, calling on the organisations to remain vigilant.
