€5.8m e-justice contract might be terminated this month

Final decisions about the future of the e-justice platform will be made within the month, Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou told the state broadcaster, adding that there is a real possibility the contract will be terminated.

“I am expecting the decision around mid-September,” he said, adding that it was no easy task. “As you understand, opting to terminate a contract like this, for a project that commenced seven years ago, maybe more, is not an easy decision to make. This is what is taking so much time. But time-wise, we are at the point where final decisions will be made. We will not allow this matter to drag on any further. Final decisions will be made in September and we will announce them.”

The final decision will be made by the Project Council, which comprises among other representatives of the Cyprus Bar Association and the Judicial Service.

Initial tests have shown that the changes made by the contractor after the system failed to take off in January, have not resolved the problems, said Damianou. “The first indications from these tests, from what I have been informed, is that the system’s users are not satisfied,” the Deputy Minister explained.

Meanwhile, he added that financially, the government is not expected to suffer losses if the €5.8m contract is terminated. So far, the company has received €1.2 million, while the possibility of claiming a refund of the amounts paid remains open. "Obviously (the remaining €4 million will not be given). And we will also claim any amounts that have been paid to date," he stressed.
