EU approves Cyprus request for support in gendered state budget preparation

Τhe European Union has approved the Republic of Cyprus’ request for technical support for the preparation of a gendered state budget, according to a joint announcement by the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Commissioner for Gender Equality.

Gender budgeting is “an ambitious” but necessary project, the announcement said, noting that the aim was to reduce poverty and gender inequalities, promote economic development and the equal participation of men and women in society and in the economy.

A gendered budget includes policies and actions based on targeted planning and statistical data, taking into account gender and age groups of the population, it adds.

It also said that the implementation of the project will be based on existing statistics concerning, among other things, the labour force, people living at the poverty line, the wage and pension gap, as well as statistics, which are expected to be developed in the context of the new National Strategy for Gender Equality.

The implementation of the gender budget, it said, “presupposes the restructuring of the policies concerning both state revenue and expenses, recognising the different needs of men and women, so that they benefit equally”.

It is noted that the request was submitted to the European Commission by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the Office of the Commissioner for Gender Equality, through the Technical Support Tool of the Directorate General for Structural Reform Support.
