Cyprus joins in Europe Day celebrations

Cyprus is celebrating Europe Day. More specifically, the Office of the European Parliament in Cyprus and the European Commission in Cyprus, as well as the Presidency, will be celebrating Europe Day with specially-organised events throughout the day.

President Nikos Christodoulides, European Vice President Margaritis Schinas and European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, will attend and address the various events on 9 May.

Also, the Nicosia Municipality is participating in the celebration, raising the EU flag at the old Town Hall in Eleftherias Square in the morning.

Both the old Town Hall and Eleftherias Square are two of many landmarks, across over 60 in the EU, to be illuminated to mark Europe Day on 9 May.

In a press release, the European Parliament notes that this campaign will be sending messages appealing to citizens to vote a month before the European elections.

Europe Day is celebrated every year on 9 May to call for peace and unity in Europe. It marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, notes the EP, in which Robert Schuman presented his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe that would make war between the nations of Europe unthinkable. Robert Schuman's proposal is considered to be the birth of what we now call the European Union.
