Deputy Minister speaks about vital importance of Space at EU Council

Cyprus' Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou has stressed the vital importance of Space for the long-term economic prosperity, strategic autonomy, security and global influence of Europe.

The Deputy Minister took part in the Competitiveness Council (Space, research and innovation) meeting that was held in Brussels. Ministers held a policy debate on the EU space law, which the Commission is expected to propose soon.

In his intervention on 23 May, Damianou noted, according to an official press release, that the new law must provide stability to business endeavors, ensuring legal security and predictability. He referred to the Cyprus National Space Legislation, which was approved last October and covers the approval, oversight and registration of national space activities.

Furthermore, a joint meeting was held with the European Space Agency during which Damianou pointed out the vital importance of Space for Europe's long-term economic prosperity, strategic autonomy, security and global influence.

Strengthening the competitiveness of the European space sector means increasing investment in innovative and commercially oriented space businesses, he added.

He also underlined the importance of developing quantum technology and artificial intelligence, as well as the dynamics that can be developed from their integration into space technologies and services.
