Italian President arriving in Cyprus for first state visit

President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, is due to arrive in Cyprus for a state visit on February 26-27.

Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said that "President Mattarella's visit is very important as it is the first visit by an Italian President since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Italy and Cyprus and is part of the 20th anniversary of Cyprus's accession to the European Union, as well as the sad anniversary of 50 years since the illegal invasion and continued occupation (of Cyprus by Turkey)".

President Mattarella, the longest serving President in the history of the Italian Republic, will be accompanied by representatives of the Italian Government and a multi-member delegation.

According to the programme of the visit, Mattarella and his entourage will arrive in the early afternoon of 26 February and their first stop will be the Presidential Palace where they will be welcomed by President Nikos Christodoulides and the First Lady.

The two presidents will hold a private meeting before expanded talks between the delegations of the two countries. They will then make statements to the press.

Mattarella and Christodoulides will also visit Nicosia Municipality and the old town along the Green Line. The Italian President will also meet with members of the Italian community on the island.

In the evening, the Cypriot presidential couple will host an official dinner in honour of the Italian President.
