Conversation Series at Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation: bαhçές histories* of Cyprus x Cyprus Insula Exhibition
Press Release 14:02 - 10 December 2024
The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and bahçes histories* of Cyprus, invite you to the second session of the “Cyprus Insula” conversation series, entitled Photography and Cyprus: representations of the island and its people from the 19th to the 20th century. The conversation will take place on Thursday, 19 December 2024, at the premises of the foundation.
In this part we will discuss how Cypriot and non-Cypriot photographers have sought to represent the history and culture of the island from the 19th to the 20th century and explore how particular ideas about identity, society, politics and change have persisted through time.
Photographs may often appear as natural, value-free representations of the world, objective records of places, people and events 'as they really were' when photographers encountered them. Yet, reading these images critically can reveal the assumptions, preconceptions and worldviews of those who produced them.
The discussions will be held in English with the possibility of translation in Greek during the conversation

Nicos Philippou, Lecturer, Department of Communications, University of Nicosia
