State closely monitoring situation following cyber-attack warning

Government agencies are closely monitoring developments, well-informed sources have said, regarding a warning by Odyssey Cybersecurity about a possible cyber-attack in Cyprus.

"We are staying alert for any developments. The developments are being closely monitored by state agencies. There is no attack,” a competent source told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

According to Odyssey, "We have observed that a hacking group known as LulzSec Black has publicly declared its intent to target the critical infrastructure of Cyprus."

"The attack appears to be politically motivated, citing Cyprus’ relationship with Israel as a factor behind the upcoming cyber offensive" it adds.

A planned cyberattack targeting the infrastructure of Cyprus had been scheduled for 17 October 2024, it says.

The threat, it adds, is further heightened by the involvement of the group “Moroccan Soldiers,” who have expressed their support for LulzSec Black in these operations.

The targeted systems include Cypriot infrastructure, specifically government, financial, and critical services, which may be at risk of service disruptions, data theft, or system compromises, it notes.

There had been no reports of an attack by the morning of 18 October.
