President goes to New York prepared and optimistic for a positive outcome

President Nikos Christodoulides has said he will be going to a tripartite dinner in New York with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar on 15 October with the required readiness and cautious optimism for a positive outcome.

President Christodoulides was speaking upon his arrival at the 8th Rural Culture Festival of the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organisation, which took place on the afternoon of 13 October in the village of Farmakas.

According to the Press and Information Office, responding to a journalist's question on whether there was any information on the intentions of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for Tuesday's informal meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, the President said he considered "particularly important that with two wars going on, in Ukraine and in the Middle East, (Mr Guterres) has taken this initiative to organise this dinner".

"What I can say with certainty is that I am going to this dinner with the readiness that is required, with cautious optimism, and I am going there for a positive outcome. And a positive outcome for us can be nothing less than the resumption of efforts to restart substantive negotiations on the basis of the agreed framework," he said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended conclusively.
