Minister: Local organic production has made remarkable progress

Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment Petros Xenophontos said that organic production in Cyprus has made enormous progress in the last twenty years.

The Minister was addressing the 1st annual Organic Farming Festival that took place in Deneia, on the occasion of the European Day of Organic Production.

In his speech, he said that according to the Register of the Department of Agriculture, from 0.22% of the total cultivated area it occupied in 2003, organic farming has reached 5.87% today.

"Our goal is to reach 7.5% by 2025," he stressed. In addition, he said that in 2003 the number of organic farmers was 85, while their number today reaches 1,500.

He also referred to the Ministry's programmes that aim to support organic farming.
