Cyprus-Egypt electrical interconnection a priority

The energy ministers of Cyprus and Egypt have agreed to set the two countries’ electrical interconnection as a priority project and resume discussions at a technical committee level.

Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry George Papanastasiou met in Cairo with the Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Sources, Dr Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi, with the two discussing ways to strengthen cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt in the fields of electricity, renewable energy and natural gas. And they decided that the two countries’ interconnection would be set as a top priority, according to an official press release.

It said the two also discussed Cyprus' progress on the issue of renewable energy sources, as well as actions taken to speed up the introduction of natural gas for electricity generation in the country, with the aim of reducing the electricity costs.

Papanastasiou also met with Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla, and discussed the wider cooperation between the two countries in the hydrocarbons sector and the latest developments in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone; more specifically the recent natural gas discoveries in the "Cronos-1" and "Zeus-1" targets.

The two Ministers also exchanged views on ways to optimally and rapidly develop the Republic of Cyprus' reserves, with the transfer of natural gas from the Cypriot EEZ to Egypt being one of the exploitation options, the press release concluded.
