LOVE CYPRUS 2023: Award ceremony for the eight Cypriot schools that won €180,000

The eight winning schools of the Yianis Christodoulou Foundation’s LOVE CYPRUS 2023 competition will be handed prizes totalling €180,000 at an official award ceremony in Limassol on 3 April 2023, in the presence of Greek singer Konstantinos Argiros and other well-known artists who will perform live at the event.

The winners of the LOVE CYPRUS 2023 competition are:

  6. Agia Paraskevi Geroskipou Gymnasium - photo
  7. Lanitio Lyceum - video
  8. Technical School ‘TESEK’ Famagusta-Avgorou – video

The judging committee – comprising Yianis Christodoulou, Anna Vissi, Marianna Latsi and Christian Moore – had the difficult task of choosing between hundreds of truly remarkable photos and videos submitted by Cypriot primary, secondary and technical/vocational schools. In fact, having exceeded all expectations with almost 200 participations and 600 entries, the foundation decided to increase the prizes this year from six to eight, and the prize money to €180,000 (from €170,000).

Meanwhile, the Yianis Christodoulou Foundation is cooperating with the State and other agencies in a bid to find more ways to utilise the amazing competition entries.

The invitation-only award ceremony will take place at Monte Caputo in Limassol, in the presence of distinguished guests, from Cyprus but also abroad who are expected to see Cyprus from a different lens: that of its children.

More specifically, more than 40 distinguished guests from Monaco will be paying Cyprus a short visit just to attend the ceremony, where the popular Greek singer Konstantinos Argiros will perform a number of hits.

The prize money will be used to fund school projects in Cyprus, including school infrastructure, renovations and the purchase of equipment. The schools will submit proposals on how to use the prizes along with their entries, which will initially be assessed by a committee including the Cyprus Ministry of Education, Sport & Youth, the Department of Primary Education and local School Boards. The Yianis Foundation will then review the projects for final approval.

The main aim of the competition is to provide opportunities for students to develop their creative skills, inspiration and initiatives for the promotion of the culture, customs, music, art and nature of Cyprus to local, European and international visitors. In this way, students would act as young promoters of Cyprus, not only as a tourist destination, but as a place recognised for its music, art, hospitality, traditions and environment in one of the two categories: photography and video.

About the Foundation

The Yianis Christodoulou Foundation, founded in the UK, operates in a number of countries, including Cyprus, the homeland of its Founder, John Christodoulou. For many years, Mr Christodoulou had donated to numerous charities and, in order to maximise his contribution and support to children, in 2016 he created his own charitable foundation to utilise his funding in the best way possible.

At the heart of the Foundation’s projects and activities are children and young people in immediate need of any kind of help and support.

The Foundation’s mission is to provide support and assistance to vulnerable groups, with an emphasis on children and young people. Its main goals for young people are:

  • To provide opportunities for education and training, enabling them to acquire and utilise the knowledge, skills and competences they will need later in life.
  • To improve their living conditions and quality of life, allowing them to grow up in a safe and healthy environment.
  • To empower students and young people in general to create a better future for themselves.
  • To provide resources to improve the quality of life of children and young people with special needs.

The Foundation envisions creating equal opportunities for the development and education of children and young people in societies that offer access to quality education, by helping them fully utilise their abilities. The Foundation strives to have a positive influence on the children’s development by investing in improving the education offered, upgrading the building infrastructure of public schools and purchasing new modern educational equipment to create an attractive learning environment.

The empowerment, support and development of youth involves many and varied sectors. The Foundation has chosen four areas of support for children and young people and their families:

  • Upgrade of public educational and social institutions
  • Promotion of creativity and talent
  • Access and social inclusion
  • Support of children with special needs or disabilities

The Foundation grants funds, provides equipment and offers services through the organisation and implementation of special programmes in selected sectors (educational programmes, training, sports, health/social welfare, etc.). All its activities are implemented either independently or in collaboration with other entities, charitable organisations or community groups, which share the Foundation’s passion for helping children in need. In general, the Foundation undertakes projects that are selected through its own research and procedures but requests submitted by other entities, which promote the aims of the Foundation, are also considered.
