Commission aims for first Turkish Cypriot PDO Halloumi to be exported by June 2024

The European Commission has set as a target for Halloumi produced in the Turkish Cypriot community in line with PDO standards to be exported through the Green Line by June 2024.

The information was announced by Kjartan Bjornsson, the head of the unit responsible for the support to the Turkish Cypriot community and reunification efforts of DG REFORM, speaking to a group of visiting Cypriot journalists from both communities in Brussels.

Bjornsson said that the goal is that "by June 2024 the first Turkish Cypriot halloumi in compliance with the PDO crosses the Green Line" and expressed the hope that the successful compliance of the Turkish Cypriot community with EU health standards for Halloumi will contribute to the public debate on the Cyprus problem.

Among other things, the European official noted that Halloumi in particular is a message of hope beyond positive data on increased crossings and trade through the Green Line, as it shows that the Turkish Cypriot community is able and willing to adopt EU standards.
