The ten major projects set to transform Cyprus’ road network

The development of a modern and safe road network is part of the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Works’ strategic objectives and, according to the Ministry’s 2023-2024 action plan, the cost of building a modern and safe road network amounts to €439.3 million, with September 2026 as the scheduled completion of the works’ implementation.

Expected benefits to society include economic growth, improved travel quality, safer roads, a reduction in accidents and a reduction in urban sprawl.

In this context, the implementation of ten infrastructure projects/interventions is being promoted, which are expected to change the face of the road network in Cyprus.

Nicosia Perimeter Motorway phase A1, section from Lakatamia Industrial Area to Dali Industrial Area

Work began in March 2020 and is expected to be completed in April 2024.

The project includes 7.5 kilometres of four-lane highway, plus approximately 10 kilometres of secondary roads, connecting the existing network.

It also includes two Dali Industrial Area intersections with the highway, one intersection in the Tseri Industrial Area with the Olympic Shooting Range and a roundabout at Strovolos-Tseriou Avenue.

The €72.3 million project is financed by the Trans-European Networks Fund (CEF).

Construction of the Astromeritis - Evrycho highway

Implementation of the project began in October 2022, with work expected to be completed in October 2025.

The project, which is financed by national resources, has an indicative cost of €88.6 million.

It is an intercity highway with four traffic lanes, 11 kilometers long. The road starts at the point of the existing Astromeritis – Evrychou road, south of the Astromeritis community, after the intersection towards the Vyzakias community and ends at the junction of the existing road. It includes an uneven junction in the Koutrafa area, uneven crossings and two level junctions for the interconnection with the existing road network. Also included is a large valley bridge over the Elia River, in the Vyzakia region.

Improvement of Argyroupoleos – Ippokratous Avenues and part of Tseriou Avenue and Strovolou Avenue in Lakatamia

Co-created by the Ministry of the Interior, the project began to be implemented in February 2023, with completion estimated in October 2025.

This is one of the most important road projects, as the roads in question, with a total length of 6.2 km, concern sections of roads of prime importance in the Nicosia Local Plan and are considered to be of great traffic and urban planning importance as they will directly connect the west with the east side of the city of Nicosia. At the same time they will also be connected to other projects, which were either implemented in the past or are being implemented today (such as the Nicosia Ring Road).

Among other things, planned works will include the construction of a road with four traffic lanes, the construction of a bridge over the bed of the Kalogeros river, as well as the construction of three roundabouts.

With the implementation of the project, it is expected that the traffic problem in greater Nicosia will be radically addressed, while the fact that the congestion problem on Spyros Kyprianou Avenue will be resolved is considered particularly important.

It is financed by national resources and has an indicative cost of €30.7 million.

Construction of Nicosia - Palechorio highway, section from Anageia to Agrokipia

Construction work began in March 2023 and is expected to be completed in September 2026.

This phase of the Nicosia – Palaichori highway concerns the construction of the Anagia – Agrokipia section, approximately 8.1 km long, with four traffic lanes, a level junction at Ergates, uneven junctions at the junction of Ayios Ioannis and Malounda and a level terminal junction near the junction Agrokipias – Mitserou. It also includes three bridges, as well as overground and underground vehicular accesses to connect existing roads.

The cost of the project, which is financed by national resources, reaches €71.4 million.

Construction of phase I of the Germasogeia - Akrounta - Dieronas - Arakapa road

Work began in August 2019, while the completion of the project is estimated to take place in June 2024.

The indicative cost reaches €8.2 million, with funding from national resources.

This is an improvement / upgrade of the section of the existing road Akrountas - Dieronas 8.1 km long. The aim of the project is the improvement / upgrade of the overall axis of Germasogeia - Akrountas - Dieronas - Arakapa which is 18.2 km long, in two construction phases.

Construction of the first phase of the Limassol - Saittas highway

Construction work, which began in September 2020, is expected to be completed in June 2024.

With funding from national resources and the Trans-European Networks Fund (CEF), the indicative cost of the project amounts to €31.1 million.

The first phase concerns the section from Polemidia to Palodia, from the Palais de Sport to the Palodia exit and is approximately 3.6 kilometres long.

The project includes a seven kilometre secondary road network, four roundabouts and an overpass, as well as an underpass and retaining walls.

Work began in May 2021, with the project expected to be completed in December 2025.

It is financed by national resources, with an indicative cost of €86.8 million.

It is emphasised that the project as a whole has a length of 31 km. approximately and its construction is being promoted in two phases. The first phase concerns the section from Ayia Marinouda to Stroumbi. The study - construction is in progress, which starts from the Limassol - Paphos highway past Ayia Marinouda, passes west of Marathousta and east of Tsada and ends on the existing Paphos - Polis road after Stroumbi, near the junction to Theletra.

Co-responsible for the project is the Ministry of the Interior. Work has been underway since

August 2022 and is expected to be completed in February 2025.

The financing comes from national resources and the indicative cost amounts to €15.6 million.

The project provides for the improvement of a road connecting the two municipalities with a length of 4 kilometeres and the construction of connecting roads with a total length of 2.5 kilometres including the upgrading of infrastructure and stormwater management with the extension of a 1.4 kilometre storm drain through the core of Deryneia Municipality.
