President to take part in working dinner of European leaders in Berlin

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides travels to Berlin on Monday, 13 November to participate in a working dinner with a group of EU member state leaders, at the invitation of the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the President of the European Council Charles Michel.

The Director of the President’s press office Victoras Papadopoulos said in a written statement that the aim of the meeting is to discuss the new Strategic Agenda, which will be adopted in June 2024 by the EU, with an emphasis on issues of enlargement and possible reforms.

Papadopoulos clarified that the working dinner is part of a series of working dinners of EU leaders to take place in Zagreb, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Paris.

Leaders of Austria, Belgium, Greece, Hungary and Latvia will also participate in the working dinner, which will take place on Monday evening at the German capital.

In remarks on Sunday, President Christodoulides had said that Cyprus would be ready to discuss the abolition of the need for unanimity in EU decisions on foreign policy matters if it is demonstrated that removing the veto would strengthen the EU.

EU leaders will be welcomed by the President of the European Council and the German Chancellor and a family photo will follow. The dinner, which will start at 21:00 Cyprus time, is expected to last around two hours.

President Christodoulides returns to Cyprus on Tuesday, 14 November.
