Cyprus opens diplomatic missions in Indonesia and Argentina

Cyprus is expanding its diplomatic presence abroad by opening diplomatic missions in Indonesia (Jakarta) and Argentina (Buenos Aires) in October.

The diplomatic mission in Indonesia had been closed down in 2013 due to the financial crisis, having first opened in 2010.

Cyprus' Ambassador-designate in Jakarta is Nikos Panayiotou, and in Buenos Aires Stelios Georgiades. They both assumed their duties there this week, ahead of the ceremonies during which they will present their credentials.

Indonesia is the biggest Muslim country with significant influence in Asia and participates in the Organisation of Islamic Conference, while with the opening of the embassy in Argentina, Cyprus' diplomatic representation in South America is reinforced, in an important country of the Spanish-speaking world.

An embassy of the Republic of Cyprus will also open in Manama, Bahrain, next month, with Andreas Eliades being the first Ambassador there. With the operation of this embassy, Cyprus will now have diplomatic missions in all Gulf countries.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos will participate on 9-10 October in the EU - Gulf Cooperation Council meeting that will take place in Muscat, Oman.
