Opportunities for collaboration in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, as well as the promotion of joint initiatives, were discussed during a meeting between the Commissioner of Electronic Communications, Marios Pieris, and a delegation of the Cyprus Information Technology Enterprises Association (CITEA), in the presence of Assistant Commissioner Georgios Georgiou.
According to a CITEA press release on Wednesday, the meeting focused on opportunities for cooperation between the Association and the Office of the Commissioner of Electronic Communications, particularly in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and strengthening links between the relevant institutional bodies and technology businesses in Cyprus.
Particular reference was made to CITEA’s proposals regarding the European Cybersecurity Act, as part of the Association’s contribution to the European dialogue and its efforts to highlight the needs and challenges faced by businesses in the sector.
The participants also explored opportunities to organise specialised training activities for CITEA members, aimed at raising awareness of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and related regulatory developments.
The meeting also addressed the promotion of joint initiatives involving relevant authorities, experts and technology businesses, with the aim of exchanging knowledge and views, identifying common challenges and developing proposals to address issues affecting the digital sector.
In a statement, CITEA President George Malekkos said that “in today’s digital age, the role of the Commissioner of Electronic Communications and the Authority is more critical than ever,” noting that “the challenges posed by cybersecurity and artificial intelligence require meaningful cooperation and immediate, practical action.”
Referring to the meeting, he said that what particularly impressed him was “the new Commissioner’s pragmatic approach and positive response to our proposals.”
“We discussed specific ideas, exchanged views, and established that there is a genuine willingness to move forward together,” he added.
He also noted that CITEA is ready to collaborate closely with the Commissioner and his Office “through joint workshops, training activities, knowledge-sharing and initiatives that will have a tangible impact on businesses and the Cypriot economy.”
Malekkos also thanked the Commissioner for the constructive meeting and his open approach, expressing confidence that “we have a very productive partnership ahead of us, with meaningful results.”
Representing CITEA at the meeting were the Association’s President George Malekkos, Vice-President Antonia Michael, Board Member Nikos Kaisis and Director Matina Zisiadou.
