Maria Charalampous: “Skills such as empathy, communication and collaboration will always be important”

Dr Maria Charalampous, Director of the Master's Programme in Work and Organisational Psychology at the University of Limassol, highlighted the growing importance of human skills, continuous learning and education in an increasingly technology-driven labour market.

Speaking at INSPIRE 2026, Charalampous stressed that technical expertise remains essential, but artificial intelligence is creating greater demand for broader capabilities.

“Skills such as empathy, communication and collaboration will always be important,” she explained, emphasising critical thinking, creativity and the ability to recognise personal learning needs.

Charalampous also highlighted the importance of employers supporting professional development.

“When organisations have a culture that encourages education, training and continuous learning, employees are much more likely to invest in it,” she said.

Addressing the debate surrounding university degrees, she defended their continued relevance, explaining that higher education provides structured learning environments that encourage analytical thinking and intellectual development.

She also expressed concern about Cyprus's relatively low participation in lifelong learning, calling for greater accessibility and encouragement.

According to Charalampous, education should extend beyond professional qualifications, with individuals developing the ability to evaluate information critically and continue learning throughout their lives.
