Global capital is no longer flowing only towards the markets promising the highest returns. It is increasingly seeking political stability, energy security, technological capacity and access to strategically important supply chains.
Geopolitics has entered the investment committee room — and it is not leaving anytime soon.
Wars, trade tensions, artificial intelligence, the energy transition and demographic change are reshaping the priorities of governments, businesses and investors. The question is no longer simply where growth can be found, but where it can be achieved with security, resilience and long-term potential.
This rapidly changing landscape will be at the heart of the discussion “The Future of Global Investment: Where Will Capital Flow Over the Next Five Years?” at the Limassol Economic Forum. The panel will bring together Evgenios Evgeniou, Chairman of Invest Cyprus, and Dimitris Skalkos, Secretary General for International Economic Affairs at Greece’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of Enterprise Greece.
Their respective organisations stand at the forefront of Cyprus and Greece’s efforts to attract foreign investment at a time when competition between countries is becoming increasingly aggressive. Tax incentives and polished presentations are no longer enough. Investors are scrutinising government efficiency, infrastructure quality, access to skilled talent, energy security and a country’s ability to serve as a gateway to larger markets.
Skalkos brings extensive experience in public policy, European investment instruments and economic diplomacy. Having served as Greece’s Secretary General for Public Investments and the Partnership Agreement, and participated in the country’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan Steering Committee, he understands the difficult path from securing investment funding to delivering tangible results.
Evgeniou adds the perspective of corporate leadership and governance. With more than 25 years of executive experience — including his tenure as Chairman and CEO of PwC Cyprus — he now leads Invest Cyprus’ efforts to strengthen the country’s position in a global contest for capital with few geographical boundaries.
The discussion will seek to identify the sectors most likely to attract investment in the coming years: from artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure to energy, defence, healthcare and technologies responding to the needs of ageing populations.
For Greece and Cyprus, the next five years represent a window of opportunity — but not a guarantee of success.
Capital may be searching for stability. It is not, however, known for its patience.
