A good idea is not just that, as a researcher or an innovative professional should think about how what he thought up in Cyprus can travel to the world, underlined the Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology, Demetris Skourides, emphasising that the researcher is called upon to think about how the product/idea can serve the public abroad.
Referring to the programs and policies that can help young people and companies take their products and solutions to foreign markets, Skourides pointed out, in the context of INSPIRE 2026, that recently the Research and Innovation Foundation has had programs that help internationalisation, with different missions abroad from the Asian side, from the Gulf side, etc.
He also explained that organisations like Plug & Play provide the opportunity for this thing to work with coherence.
"But what is needed is, first of all, someone to believe that their idea can reach millions of users, to believe in the product itself. Let's not just design for a small market," he noted.
Collaboration, fast speeds and a change of perspective
Emphasising the need for collaboration, which can bring success, he indicated that last October, in collaboration with the Municipality of Nicosia, astronauts were hosted in Nicosia.
"The issue is what we do next. And that's where we need to invest more in creating an ecosystem, which requires all stakeholders to come together to create. We need more collaboration and guidance from the most experienced people, to help the new generations see things with their entrepreneurial risk," emphasised the Chief Scientist, explaining that every idea has risk and capital that must be invested.
Demetris Skourides also called for a change of perspective, seeing things the way a young person might see them. "We see a young Elon Musk, who imagined the car a little differently than how Mercedes or BMW and so on saw it. We have now seen how Tesla has changed the automotive industry," he pointed out.
He also praised the role of speed and fast pace in the basis of the pace at which foreign markets and industries operate.
The Chief Scientist assured that Cyprus has proven that it has the research excellence and knowledge to be able to move forward, encouraging young people to dare. “I would tell our young people that we have many examples from Cyprus, which are already going out to the world and being exported. We also have the tools, which we can make available to help them. Failure is, if you want, a new opportunity, take the first step”, Skourides emphasised.
