The importance of a broader and more dynamic approach to cybersecurity was developed by Ramses Gallego, Chief Technologist, Cybersecurity. ISACA Hall of Fame, DXC Technology, ISACA, presenting the topic 'From Cybersecurity to Cyber Resilience: A New Beginning' during the 6th Cyber Security Conference.
Gallego, in his famously explosive and illustrative manner, likened the modern reality of digital defense to the Oscar-winning film Everything Everywhere All at Once, emphasising that organisations are being called upon to manage everything, everywhere and at the same time. In our time, security includes identity, data, applications, the cloud, artificial intelligence, post-quantum encryption, access control and privacy protection. As he explained, artificial intelligence is not coming to replace humans, but to enhance them, offering enormous analytical power to executives and controllers through modern language models. This new principle (“A New Dawn”) is based precisely on the combination of man and machine.
At the same time, he emphasised the need for businesses to “connect the dots” between their different departments, overcoming traditional divisions. He called on privacy executives to talk to application developers and identity managers to collaborate with legal counsel and human resources, as access and privileges concern the entire organization.
Using a hypothetical public transport map of Cyprus as a metaphor, Gallego highlighted the importance of protecting unstructured data and the complexity of the Industry.
He referred to the data that companies don’t know exists, don’t control, and don’t protect, but which poses the biggest threat. He underlined that whether with or without the use of AI, someone within the business must be aware of and manage solutions such as browser isolation, DNS protection, and data loss prevention.
Closing his speech with a powerful call for immediate action, Gallego used a great quote from Mother Teresa, urging attendees to leverage the knowledge and connections of the conference to do things differently, "Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin." He reminded the audience that yesterday is gone, tomorrow has not yet come, and the only thing we have in our hands to protect our businesses is today.
