The Trilateral Summit of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt is to be held in El Alamein with the participation of President Nikos Christodoulides, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The summit will begin at 1pm (local time) on Tuesday, 8 September, after which the three leaders will make statements to the media.
The discussions will focus on critical geopolitical developments in the region and ways to further strengthen trilateral relations.
Before the summit, President Christodoulides will hold a bilateral meeting with his Egyptian counterpart.
President Christodoulides will also attend, as President Sisi’s guest of honour, the opening ceremony of the El-Alamein International Airshow.
President Christodoulides has said that the three countries can, “through a positive approach”, contribute to creating conditions of security and cooperation in a region of particular geostrategic importance.
The summit is also expected to address the Mecca Agreement signed on 7 August between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis has said that the trilateral summit is taking place at a particularly important juncture for the wider region.
“Against the backdrop of wider geopolitical developments, the importance of the stable and long-standing cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt, as well as the value of close coordination through regional cooperation frameworks, with particular importance attached to the Cyprus-Greece-Egypt trilateral partnership, is becoming even more evident,” he said.
He added that the trilateral framework has been established as an important mechanism for regional coordination and cooperation, making use of the geographical position of the three countries, the participation of Cyprus and Greece in the European Union, and Egypt’s particularly important role in the Arab world and the wider region.
Regarding Cyprus-Egypt relations, Letymbiotis said they are based on longstanding historical and political ties and have expanded and deepened significantly in recent years, having now been institutionally upgraded to the level of a Strategic Partnership.
Cooperation between the two countries, he added, covers a wide range of areas, with particular emphasis on energy, security and the economy, as well as close political and diplomatic coordination on regional and international developments.
President Christodoulides will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, the Government Spokesman and government officials.
