Holguin to meet UNSG this week in New York

UNSG's Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Ángela Holguín, will meet with the Secretary-General, António Guterres, in New York, the UN spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, said.

The UN's Spokesperson highlighted the need for adequate preparation ahead of any future meeting in the expanded “5+1” format on the Cyprus issue, and noted that this would involve “serious discussions.”

Discussing the prospects of a 5+1 meeting in September, as well as the UNSG's upcoming visit to the island, Dujarric said Holguín's engagement should be seen as a sign of the United Nations’ continued involvement in the Cyprus issue.

“You should interpret it in the fact that she, on behalf of the Secretary-General, continues to be engaged on the Cyprus issue” he said.

“We continue to engage both with the Greek Cypriot leadership and the Turkish Cypriot leadership on the way forward,” he added.

Dujarric reiterated that any future 5+1 meetings must be adequately prepared and involve serious discussions.
