Barley yields in Cyprus are expected to be significantly higher in 2026 compared with both 2025 and the average of the past five years, according to the monthly crop monitoring bulletin published on Monday by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC).
More specifically, the JRC forecasts a barley yield of 2.28 tonnes per hectare in Cyprus in 2026, compared with an average yield of 1.76 tonnes per hectare over the past five years and 0.93 tonnes per hectare in 2025. The forecast represents an increase of 30% compared with the five-year average and 144% compared with last year.
The JRC notes that the yield forecasts included in the bulletin are produced for crops covering more than 10,000 hectares per country. For several other crops, including wheat, maize, potatoes, sunflower and soybeans, no forecast for Cyprus is provided.
At European Union level, the JRC reports that prolonged high temperatures and particularly severe water deficits have significantly worsened the outlook for summer crops in western Europe and across large parts of central Europe. According to the JRC, the impacts range from moderate yield reductions to severe losses and, in the worst-affected areas, possible crop failure.
