Visits by locals to food and recreation businesses in several areas of Cyprus have increased during the summer season, even though tourist numbers remain around 15-20% lower than last year, according to Neophytos Thrasyvoulou, President of the Federation of Leisure Centre Owners’ Associations (OSIKA).
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Thrasyvoulou said activity during this period was “very satisfactory” across all coastal areas, as well as in mountainous areas. He noted that although many travelled abroad, Cypriots had “supported their own country”.
There is no decline as regards Cypriots, he said, adding that visitor numbers had increased in several areas, including Paphos and the free area of Famagusta.
By contrast, tourist activity remains “around 15-20% lower” than last year, he said, attributing the situation to international developments as well as visitors’ choices regarding accommodation and dining.
He explained that tourists who opt for very low-cost accommodation do not necessarily have more money available for eating out and entertainment, as they have a specific budget for their holidays.
Thrasyvoulou said Poland was among the emerging markets, while Israel no longer accounts for as large a share of Cyprus’ tourism market as it did in previous years.
He expressed hope that the growth recorded last year from France, Germany and Central Europe would continue. He also expressed hope that efforts by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism to attract visitors from northern European countries would bear fruit.
The OSIKA president highlighted the importance of the domestic market to businesses in the sector.
Concluding, Thrasyvoulou said he believed Cyprus had “all the potential” to become more competitive in tourism and outperform other countries, noting that “a joint effort by all of us will bring the desired result.”
He also thanked locals who, despite the prevailing economic conditions, support food and recreation businesses during this summer season.
