New €9m battery energy storage station to be created in Kalavasos towards better management during peak periods

Phanos Epiphaniou (Investments) Ltd is planning to construct and operate an energy storage system with a maximum output power of 10MW and a total storage capacity of 40MWh in the Kalavasos community in the Larnaca district.

The purpose of the proposed project, which has secured the approval of the Environmental Authority, is to store electricity due to excess production and channel it into the national electricity grid during periods of increased demand.

This channeling will help to better manage electricity during periods of high demand, contributing to maintaining the stability of the energy network.

The estimated cost of the project is €9 million, with an estimated execution period of six months.

According to the Information Report, the storage of energy in the batteries will be carried out by charging them from the EAC medium voltage network, when the energy price in the free competitive electricity market will be at a very low price due to excess production. The installation will receive electricity from the EAC medium voltage network. The current will enter the EAC Medium Voltage Substation, which will be erected within the unit. At the EAC substation, the current voltage will be at 11,000 volts or 22,000 volts.

The 11,000volts or 22,000volts voltage current will be transferred to transformers, where the voltage will be reduced to 600/800volts. Then, the current will be fed to the AC/DC & DC power conversion system (PCS). Through the PCS, the alternating current will be converted into direct current to charge the batteries, with the aim of storing energy in the form of direct current. The entire process will be controlled by the EMS (Energy Management System) system, which will manage the method of connection to the EAC network, and by the BMS (Battery Management System), which will manage the method and rate of charging and discharging the batteries.

The energy will be fed into the grid when there is an increased demand or need to support the grid. When energy is required from the grid, the batteries release the stored energy in the form of direct current. Through the PCS, the direct current will be converted into alternating current. The alternating current will pass through the unit's transformer, where the voltage will be increased to 600/800 volts. The 600/800 volts will be transferred to the EAC Medium Voltage Substation, where the voltage will be increased to 11,000 volts or 22,000 volts for feeding into the medium voltage grid.

What will the storage system encompass?

The proposed energy storage system will operate with accumulators, which will be placed in prefabricated container-type structures. The storage system will consist of 16 containers, which will consist of batteries with a total storage capacity of 40MWh, medium-range transformers of 5MVA and a power conversion system (PCS), a consumer / producer substation, an EAC medium voltage substation and an import/export and connection substation with the EAC.

According to the Information Report, the auxiliary control boxes and the control room will include the infrastructure and systems required to monitor the operation of the facility.

The connection of the system to the electricity grid will be based on the connection conditions to be determined by the Cyprus Transmission System Operator in the context of the licensing process. The necessary equipment will be founded on reinforced concrete infrastructure, while the cabling will be underground.

The proposed project is located within a plot, which administratively falls within the community of Kalavasos, Larnaca District. Access to the proposed project will be via an existing registered road network that serves neighboring facilities. The total area of ​​the development plot amounts to 12,996 sq.m.
