The European Union’s Special Representative for Cyprus and Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Raffaele Fitto, is expected to arrive in Cyprus on Thursday. On Friday, he will have meetings with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, as well as the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman.
A spokesperson for the European Commission has told the Cyprus News Agency the visit is part of Fitto’s mandate to contribute to the UN-led settlement process, in close cooperation and coordination with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar.
President Christodoulides said on Wednesday that he would meet Fitto on Friday and that the EU Special Representative would also hold talks with Erhürman.
Fitto’s visit comes a day after the conclusion of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ visit to Cyprus. Guterres announced his intention to convene another 5+1 meeting on the Cyprus problem, after adequate preparations on confidence-building, methodology and substance, taking into account the convergences already achieved.
