For the first time since the Crans-Montana Conference, the substance of the Cyprus issue and specific aspects of the negotiating acquis were discussed, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said following Wednesday's trilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.
Speaking to reporters at the Presidential Palace, President Christodoulides said that the meeting focused on "specific issues" and "the convergences," noting that this was why the UN Secretary-General referred both to his public statement and to Crans-Montana, as that was where the substance of the discussion was centred.
Asked whether Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leader had accepted the negotiating acquis, the President said that the UN Secretary-General had held contacts with the Turkish side to secure, as he himself had stated, its approval for convening the expanded 5+1 meeting. "I want to believe that there is a positive response," the President said.
