Cyprus recorded the highest share in the EU for energy consumption used for space cooling in 2024

Cyprus recorded the highest share in the European Union in terms of energy used by households for space cooling in 2024, according to data published by Eurostat.

Based on the figures, the energy used by households in Cyprus for space cooling amounted to 1,925 terajoules in 2024, corresponding to 16.0% of households’ final energy consumption. Malta followed, with the corresponding share standing at 15.0%.

In Greece, 7.4% of household energy consumption was used for space cooling, while in Spain and Italy the shares were lower, at 2.5% and 2.3% respectively.

Across EU households, energy consumption for space cooling has been increasing steadily, reaching 80.4 thousand terajoules in 2024.
