Portuguese Ambassador reaffirms support for Cyprus in farewell meeting with House President

Cyprus can rely on Portugal’s continued support, outgoing Ambassador Vanda Sequeira told House President Annita Demetriou during a farewell meeting marking the end of her diplomatic tenure.

According to a statement from the House of Representatives, Demetriou thanked Sequeira for the strong cooperation fostered between parliament and the Portuguese embassy, noting her active role in strengthening bilateral ties across multiple sectors and promoting shared cultural and political links between the two countries.

She expressed confidence that the momentum built in recent years would continue to deliver tangible outcomes.

Addressing developments around the Cyprus issue ahead of an anticipated informal expanded meeting, Demetriou stressed the importance of achieving meaningful progress that could pave the way for the resumption of substantive negotiations. She underlined the need for increased pressure on Turkey, particularly in light of the expected appointment of an EU Special Envoy on the Cyprus problem.

Demetriou also reiterated that any advancement in Turkey’s EU accession process must depend on its adherence to international law, respect for EU principles and values, and fulfilment of its obligations toward both the Union and the Republic of Cyprus.

For her part, Sequeira reaffirmed Portugal’s firm backing for efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue in line with UN resolutions. She also highlighted Portugal’s contribution to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

The ambassador emphasised Portugal’s commitment to international law and multilateralism, pointing to its election to the UN Security Council, and assured that Cyprus will continue to have Portugal’s support. She concluded by stressing her country’s genuine interest in promoting peace and stability on the island.
