Cyprus to host high-level EU summit on islands and coastal regions

Cyprus will host a high-level European Union conference in Paphos on June 25 and 26, focusing on strengthening island and coastal communities across the bloc.

Organised by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in cooperation with the European Commission, the event will bring together President Nikos Christodoulides, Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela, European Commissioners, ministers from Cyprus and other EU member states, as well as senior EU officials.

According to the Cyprus Presidency Secretariat, the conference will feature the presentation of two new comprehensive EU strategies targeting islands and coastal regions. These will be introduced by European Commission Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms Raffaele Fitto and Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis.

The strategies aim to boost economic competitiveness and diversification, advance the sustainable blue economy, address climate challenges, and improve resilience and connectivity. They also seek to support inclusive and thriving communities, while reinforcing the right of residents to remain in these regions.

The event is expected to serve as a platform for high-level policy dialogue, examining how EU frameworks, funding programmes, and national policies can better respond to the distinct needs and opportunities of island and coastal areas across Europe.

On the afternoon of June 25, participants will visit co-funded development projects in Paphos, covering the area from Grigori Afxentiou Street to Khan Ibrahim.

Formal proceedings will take place on June 26, beginning at 9:30am with addresses by President Christodoulides and Prime Minister Abela. A group photograph is scheduled for 10:30am, while the conference will conclude at 1:00pm. The sessions will be streamed live via the Cyprus Presidency’s YouTube channel.
