Europe is seeking new allies in the battle for innovation

Technology is redefining economic power, competitiveness and international relations, and cooperation between countries is taking on a new dimension.

The development of artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure and new technologies creates the need for stronger synergies, joint investments and the interconnection of innovation ecosystems, with the aim of creating sustainable growth at a global level.

In this environment, regional cooperation emerges as a key factor for progress, as no country or organization can meet the challenges of the digital age alone. Knowledge exchange, access to infrastructure and the use of talent are now shaping a new development model based on collective progress.

These issues were discussed at the Fireside Chat entitled 'Regional Cooperation in the Digital Era,' which took place within the framework of the Digital Conference 'Shaping the Next Digital Frontier,' organised by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy in the context of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The discussion was attended by Evgenios Evgeniou, Chairman of Invest Cyprus, and Deemah AlYahya, Founding Secretary-General, Digital Cooperation Organisation, Founder, WomenSpark, Digital Economy & Tech Diplomat and an internationally recognised figure in the fields of digital economy and technology diplomacy.

Evgeniou referred to the dynamic development of Cyprus' technology sector, noting that in recent years it has become one of the most important pillars of the economy, with its contribution now surpassing traditional sectors and attracting significant foreign investment.

At the same time, he emphasised that Europe is called upon to move simultaneously in two directions: to strengthen its strategic autonomy in critical areas, such as computing power, data centers and supercomputers, while maintaining open channels of cooperation with the rest of the world.

Evgeniou noted that international interest in cooperation with the European Union remains particularly strong, with countries and businesses from regions such as India and the Gulf seeking bridges to the European market through Cyprus. He added that the movement of technological talent and the exchange of know-how are key factors for the development of the entire region.

On her part, AlYahya focused on the need to create a new model of international cooperation that brings governments, businesses, investors, academic institutions and organisations to the same table, with a common goal of prosperity and sustainable development.

As she mentioned, the establishment of the Digital Cooperation Organisation arose precisely from this need, creating a new multilateral cooperation platform that allows countries to share best practices, technological capabilities, infrastructure and knowledge, rather than developing isolated solutions.

AlYahya also placed particular emphasis on the importance of a human-centered approach in the digital age, noting that any form of regional cooperation must place people at the center of decisions, ensuring that technological progress is translated into real benefits for societies.

The discussion was moderated by George Tziortzis, Head of Consulting Services at EY Cyprus.
