Virkkunen says the digital age is Europe’s present

The Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy Henna Virkkunen said that the digital age is not Europe’s future but rather its present, at the Digital Conference ‘Shaping the Next Digital Frontier’ held on Wednesday as part of the Cyprus EU Council Presidency.

Speaking through a video message at the conference, Virkkunen said that through the EU sovereignty act, “Europe is not turning inward, but remains committed to openness.”

She added that the act marks a shift in the continent’s objectives to transform the economy by adopting new technologies and boost investment.

“We want to boost investment in talent and driving the business environment,” she said.

Commenting on AI, Virkkunen said that by 2030 artificial intelligence will drive growth and this is “Europe’s moment to assert itself in AI.”

She closed her message to conference saying these strategies are not about isolation, but about a “Europe that invests boldly and protects its values and its citizens.”
