The first meetings with the contractor of the project for the supply and commissioning of three energy storage facilities in strategic locations of the Transmission System in Cyprus, with a total cost of €50 million, are expected to take place this month.
Transmission System Operator Cyprus (TSOC) Executive Director, Stavros Stavrinos, has told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the aim is to immediately start the required implementation works, adding that these facilities will contribute to the stabilization of the electrical system, the reduction of power generation cuts from Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and the increase in the penetration of RES in the system.
He noted that the cost of €50 million will not be paid immediately but gradually over a 10-year period.
Stavrinos explained to CNA that following the public procurement and licensing procedures, TSO has awarded an international tender for the supply and commissioning of these energy storage facilities at strategic locations.
According to a CERA- Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority - decision taken in 2025, Stavrinos said, two of the three facilities will have a capacity of 40 MW/160 MWh each, while the third will have a capacity of 40 MW/80 MWh and will additionally have grid-forming functionality.
TSO Head said that the project marks the introduction of advanced central storage technologies into the Transmission System, enabling it to gain significant experience and know-how in the operation, management and exploitation of such systems, in particular for the provision of ancillary services and the improvement of the security and stability of the system.
Stavrinos assured that the TSO, in collaboration with the contractor, will make every effort to safeguard that the systems operate within the planned schedule.
