President travels to Barcelona ahead of new Sagrada Familia tower inauguration

President Nikos Christodoulides is to travel to Barcelona on Wednesday for the inauguration of the new Sagrada Família tower, taking place later in the day, at the invitation of the Spanish Government in his capacity as President of the Member State holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

According to a written statement by the Director of the President’s Press Office, Victoras Papadopoulos, President Christodoulides is to travel to Barcelona today where, at the invitation of the Spanish Government in his capacity as President of the Member State holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU, will attend the inauguration of the Sagrada Família tower, which will take place later on Wednesday.

Pope Leo will celebrate a solemn Mass at the Sagrada Família Basilica and will also officiate at the blessing of the Basilica’s new tower.

It is noted that the ceremony will also be attended by heads of state and government, as well as other dignitaries.

The inauguration coincides with the centenary of the death of the Basilica’s architect and visionary, Antoni Gaudí, Papadopoulos notes.

On Thursday, President Christodoulides will visit the exhibition “Picasso and Cyprus: Encounters with the Ceramics of the Mediterranean” at the Picasso Museum. The exhibition is being organised as part of the Cultural Programme of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union
