The Ministry of Defence has announced the successful completion of the first milestone under the European Union’s SAFE (Security Action for Europe) Regulation, concerning the conclusion of contracts within the framework of national armament programmes with Cypriot and European defence industry companies.
In a press release, the Ministry said the development marks an important step forward in promoting national priorities in the fields of defence and security, while also contributing to the implementation of EU objectives aimed at strengthening the Union’s defence readiness and security.
The Ministry noted that the successful conclusion of negotiations and the signing of the relevant contracts were the result of coordinated efforts and confirmed its commitment to fully utilising the opportunities provided under the SAFE Regulation.
According to the statement, the aim is to enhance operational capabilities and further strengthen the European defence and industrial base.
At the same time, the Ministry said it continues efforts to conclude interstate agreements for joint procurement of defence equipment with EU member states and partners, in the context of making optimal use of available European funding instruments.
The objective, it added, is to contribute substantially to the implementation of armament programmes, strengthen interoperability and cooperation among member states, and maximise the benefits arising from participation in the SAFE programme.
The Ministry concluded that the process also creates the conditions for the further development of the defence capabilities of the Republic of Cyprus, to the benefit of the country’s defence and security.
