Cyprus ranks among the countries with the highest shares of foreign visitors in tourist overnight stays in the European Union for the first quarter of 2026, according to data published by Eurostat.
More specifically, Cyprus ranks second with 85.6%, behind Malta with 93.3%, while Luxembourg is third with 85.1%. The lowest shares of foreign visitors were recorded in Germany with 19.9%, Poland with 20.2%, and Romania with 22.4%.
According to the same data, foreign visitors accounted for approximately 46.6% of total overnight stays in the European Union during the first quarter of 2026.
At the same time, Cyprus recorded 368,639 overnight stays in January 2026, 476,000 in February, and 503,579 in March, in accommodation establishments such as hotels, holiday rentals, and other short-stay accommodation. On a year-on-year basis, the country recorded an increase of 14.43% in January compared with the same month of 2025, a rise of 32.17% in February, while March recorded a decrease of 36.81%.
At EU level, total overnight stays in tourist accommodation during the first quarter of 2026 amounted to 471.1 million, marking an increase of 3.4% compared with the same period in 2025. January recorded 143.5 million overnight stays (3.2%), February 154.4 million (3.4%), and March 173.2 million (3.7%).
Eurostat reports that, at member state level, the largest increase in the first quarter of 2026 was recorded in Ireland with 35.3%, followed by Malta with 11.1% and Denmark with 9.3%. In contrast, decreases were recorded in nine Member States, with Lithuania registering the largest drop of 12.9%, followed by Romania with 6.7% and Luxembourg with 3.8%.
