Industrial production up 4.7% year-on-year in March on strong electricity output

Cyprus’ industrial production expanded by 4.7% year-on-year in March 2026, driven largely by a sharp increase in electricity supply and continued growth in manufacturing activity, according to data released on Thursday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus.

The Industrial Production Index reached 116.7 points in March 2026, based on 2021=100, while for the first quarter of the year the index rose by 1.5% compared with the corresponding period of 2025.

Electricity supply recorded the strongest annual increase among the main industrial sectors, rising by 19.0% in March, while mining and quarrying expanded by 9.2%. Water supply and materials recovery increased by 3.9%, and manufacturing output rose by 2.8%.

Within manufacturing, the production of basic metals and fabricated metal products posted the largest increase, up 8.5% compared with March last year. Rubber and plastic products rose by 7.1%, while other non-metallic mineral products increased by 4.5%. The food, beverages and tobacco products sector also recorded solid growth of 3.5%.

By contrast, production declined in machinery and equipment, motor vehicles and other transport equipment, which fell by 4.8% year-on-year. The furniture, other manufacturing, and repair and installation of machinery and equipment category also contracted by 3.9%.

For the January-March 2026 period, the strongest gains were registered in water collection, treatment and supply, which rose by 10.1%, followed by electricity supply at 7.4% and basic metals and fabricated metal products at 6.4%.

The weakest-performing sectors during the first quarter were furniture and related manufacturing activities, which dropped by 6.2%, machinery and transport equipment manufacturing, down 5.4%, and textiles, wearing apparel and leather products, which declined by 4.7%.
