Population growth in Cyprus exceeds 30% in 20 years, according to Eurostat

Cyprus recorded a population of 982,966 inhabitants on 1 January 2025, up from 966,365 in 2024, according to data published on Thursday by Eurostat as part of the European Union’s annual demographic overview.

At EU level, the population reached 451 million in 2025, marking an increase of approximately one million compared with 2024. Eurostat notes that the EU continues to record a modest population increase, while at the same time demographic shifts linked to population ageing are accelerating.

Cyprus remains among the least populous Member States of the European Union, accounting for around 0.2% of the EU’s total population. The largest Member States by population are Germany (84 million), France (69 million), Italy (59 million), Spain (49 million) and Poland (36 million), together representing 66% of the Union’s total population.

Cyprus is among the countries with the strongest relative population growth over the 2005–2025 period, with an increase of approximately 34%.

At EU level, the share of people aged 65 and over rose from 17% in 2005 to 22% in 2025, while 6% of the population is aged 80 or above.

The median age in the EU increased to 44.9 years in 2025, compared with 39.6 years in 2005.

In Cyprus, the median age stands at 41 years, below the EU average.

In the European Union, children and adolescents under the age of 15 account for 14% of the population, while in Cyprus the share is 15.2%.

In 2024, around 6 million people migrated to the European Union, with 74% coming from non-EU countries and 26% from other EU Member States.

In Cyprus, immigration inflows amounted to 40,471 people in 2024, compared with 40,761 in 2023.

At the same time, around 3.1 million people emigrated from the EU in 2024, with Cyprus recording 26,883 departures in 2024, compared with 26,979 in 2023.

Eurostat notes that since 2012 deaths have exceeded births in the EU, with the crude rate of natural population change standing at −2.8 in 2024.

In Cyprus, the indicator remains positive at 3.1, placing the country among the few Member States with positive natural population change, alongside Ireland (3.4) and Luxembourg (2.9).
