“Cyprus remains a key market for Wizz Air, and we continue to evaluate opportunities to further enhance connectivity based on demand and long-term potential,” Wizz Air Corporate Communications Manager Olivia Harangozo tells CBN.
Outlining the airline’s future plans for the island, Harangozo said Wizz Air is focused on expanding travel options through affordable fares and convenient direct connections. “The addition of Athens and Madrid is an important step in strengthening our presence on the island, with further growth opportunities ahead,” she added.
How is Wizz Air responding to surging jet fuel prices triggered by Middle East unrest, the Strait of Hormuz blockade, and the Iran war? Has the unrest altered travel plans among Wizz Air passengers from Cyprus?
Wizz Air continues to monitor the situation triggered by the Middle East unrest very closely, as we do with all geopolitical developments that may affect aviation. At this stage, our operations from Cyprus are running as scheduled and we continue to inform our passengers with all the updates to specific flights.
Currently, there is no fuel shortage, and while the wider environment remains uncertain, contingency measures are already being activated across the industry where needed. Wizz Air’s priority remains the safety of our passengers and crew, while continuing to offer reliable and affordable connectivity.
As a low-cost carrier, is Wizz Air implementing any measures to avoid passing on fuel cost increases to passenger fares?
Our low-cost model is built around efficiency, and this is especially important during periods of higher fuel prices. Wizz Air operates one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets in Europe, with aircraft that consume significantly less fuel than older-generation aircraft. Wizz Air has a fleet of 262 aircraft, and 75% of them are the state-of-the-art Airbus A321neos, and their average age is below 5 years.
In addition, Wizz Air has fuel hedging in place, including coverage for the winter period, which helps reduce exposure to short-term volatility. While fuel prices are an industry-wide challenge, our cost discipline, efficient operations, and modern fleet allow us to remain focused on offering passengers affordable fares.
Despite global tensions, Wizz Air is expanding from Larnaca with new routes to Athens and Madrid. What does this signal for Cyprus's air connectivity near the Middle East?
Our expansion from Larnaca with new routes to Athens and Madrid underlines our long-term strategic commitment in Cyprus. The Madrid route is particularly significant, as Wizz Air becomes the first airline in nearly a decade to reintroduce a direct connection between Larnaca and the Spanish capital, reopening access to a key Western European market.
Demand for Athens remains consistently strong, while early performance indicators for Madrid are highly encouraging. This confirms that, despite global uncertainty, demand for direct, affordable and reliable travel remains resilient.
More importantly, this expansion sends a clear signal about Cyprus’ role in the region. At a time of geopolitical tension in the Middle East, strengthening connectivity from Larnaca reinforces Cyprus' position as a stable and reliable European gateway, linking the Eastern Mediterranean with major European destinations.
We remain focused on investing in routes that deliver measurable value, strengthening Cyprus connectivity, supporting tourism and business links, and ensuring year-round access to key European markets.
To what extend does this expansion position Cyprus as a safe European hub, enhancing year-round connectivity for island residents and tourists?
Cyprus is an important European destination with strong appeal throughout the year, not only during the summer season. Offering nearly 40 direct routes from Larnaca, expanding connectivity supports the island’s position as a stable and attractive hub for both leisure and business travel.
For residents, these routes mean more choice and more direct access to major European cities. For tourists, they make Cyprus more accessible and help support year-round tourism, which is a key priority for the island’s economy.
What are Wizz Air’s future plans to enhance connectivity to and from Cyprus? Can passengers look forward to more exciting new fares, and what additional developments does the carrier have in store for the island?
Cyprus remains a key market for Wizz Air, and we continue to evaluate opportunities to further enhance connectivity based on demand and long-term potential.
We focus on offering more travel choices, affordable fares, and convenient direct routes. The addition of Athens and Madrid is an important step in strengthening our presence on the island, with further growth opportunities ahead.
With a modern, fuel-efficient fleet and a strong cost base, we are well positioned to remain competitive while expanding our network. As market conditions evolve, passengers can expect continued investment in Cyprus, improved connectivity, and more accessible travel options in the future.
