Finance Minister discusses Cyprus EU Presidency priorities with ESMA Chair

Issues relating to the priorities of Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the EU concerning the promotion of policies aimed at strengthening financial stability within the Union were discussed during a meeting in Nicosia between Finance Minister Makis Keravnos and Chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), Verena Ross.

During the 29 April meeting, views were exchanged on matters linked to the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union regarding the promotion of policies that would bolster financial stability within the EU, the ongoing dialogue on the integration of financial markets, as well as the supervision of those markets, a Finance Ministry press release said.

Keravnos, it added, “praised” Ross for her work as Chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority, saying it strengthened the stability, integrity and credibility of European markets at a time marked by complexity, digitalisation and geopolitical challenges.

He also stressed that the Cyprus EU Presidency would handle with due care the dossier concerning a stronger and more effective role for ESMA, guided by the principles of proportionality, risk-based supervision and meaningful supervisory convergence.
