Cyprus leads in social network use among young people in the EU

Cyprus recorded the highest rate of online social network use among young people aged 16 to 29 in the European Union in 2025, with 98.25% of young people reporting that they used them, according to data published by Eurostat.

This places Cyprus in first place among the 19 EU member states for which data are available, followed by Czechia (97.2%), Denmark (96.9%) and Finland (96.6%). At the other end of the scale, the lowest rates were recorded in Italy (80.3%), Germany (84.2%) and Luxembourg (84.8%).

Eurostat noted that social network use also remains high among older age groups in Cyprus, with 94.72% of people aged 35-44, 88.34% of those aged 45-54, 77.75% of those aged 55-65, and 57.70% of those aged 65-74 using such platforms.

With regard to gender, social network use in Cyprus among young people aged 16-29 is 98.31% for men and 98.17% for women. In the 25-64 age group, the corresponding rates are 89.28% for men and 91.10% for women.

In the case of the general population, where 67.3% of Europeans used social networks in 2025, use by young people in Cyprus exceeds this level by 11.8 percentage points, ranking third in the related comparison (86.5% versus 98.3%). The smallest gaps were recorded in Denmark (7.2 percentage points, 89.7% versus 96.9%) and Malta (10.3 points, 81.6% versus 91.9%). The largest gaps were observed in Croatia (29.2 points), Austria (28.2 points) and Poland (27.2 points).

Eurostat defines social network use as participating in social networks, such as creating a user profile and posting messages on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, etc.
