The Mayor of Nicosia Charalambos Prountzos has spoken about the importance of Nicosia as the administrative and economic centre of the country and the role of cities in shaping economic development.
In his speech from the podium of the 16th Nicosia Economic Congress, he welcomed the participants to the capital, noting that the conference focuses on issues concerning the present and future of the economy, particularly in a period of increased geopolitical developments in the wider Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region.
As he stated, these developments affect energy security, investment flows, trade and overall economic stability. He underlined that the presence of the President of the Republic, members of the government, as well as personalities from the political, business and academic worlds highlights the high level of the organisation.
Live dialogue space
Prountzos noted that Nicosia, as the administrative and economic centre of the country, is a vibrant space for dialogue, innovation and strategic planning. At the same time, he characterised the city as an important regional centre of entrepreneurship, which attracts investments and collaborations and contributes to the shaping of policies and initiatives with a broader impact.
He said that such events strengthen the profile of Nicosia as a modern European capital that can host meaningful high-level dialogue. He also stressed that the country's capital has the potential to offer even more to Cyprus' development path.
The city's priorities
Referring to the city's priorities, the Mayor of Nicosia spoke of public investments related to traffic, the expansion of greenery and the improvement of infrastructure in the city centre. As he noted, the country's development takes place mainly in cities and enhancing the quality of life is an important factor for economic progress.
Hub of regional activities
Prountzos also underlined that Cyprus is no longer just a tax destination, but a rising place for the establishment and development of regional activities. According to the Mayor, the country's strategy for attracting international businesses, entrepreneurs and workers is directly linked to the quality of life in cities.
In this context, he stressed that public investments in transport, sustainability, infrastructure and urban development act as important multipliers for the economy.
Finally, the Mayor stated that the Cypriot economy is in a period of significant changes and new challenges, with key priorities being to strengthen the competitiveness of businesses and attract investments for the sustainable development of the country.
