The trade deficit in January 2026 recorded a significant annual decrease of €230.9 million, dropping to €476.6 million, according to preliminary data from CySTAT, which also noted that the trade deficit increased by €891 million in 2025, compared to 2024 based on revised data.
CySTAT said that total imports of goods in January 2026 were €994.1m, compared to €1,151.2m in January 2025, recording a decrease of 13.6%.
Imports from other EU member states were €554.3m and from third countries €439.8m, compared to €583.0m and €568.2m, respectively, in January 2025.
Imports in January 2026 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with a total value of €79.0m, compared to €79.9m in January 2025.
Total exports of goods in January 2026 were €517.5m, compared to €443.7m in January 2025, recording an increase of 16.6%.
Exports to other EU member states were €97.2m and to third countries €420.3m, compared to €84.4m and €359.3m, respectively, in January 2025.
Exports in January 2026 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with a total value of €193.5m, compared to €11.3m in January 2025.
The trade deficit was €476.6m in January 2026, compared to €707.5m in January 2025.
December 2025, Final Data
Total imports of goods amounted to €1,249.3m in December 2025, compared to €1,386.1m in December 2024, recording a decrease of 9.9%.
Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €274.2m in December 2025, compared to €249.7m in December 2024, recording an increase of 9.8%.
Domestic exports of industrial products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €262.5m in December 2025, compared to €239.0m in December 2024.
Domestic exports of agricultural products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €10.9m in December 2025, compared to €9.2m in December 2024.
Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €224.2m in December 2025, compared to €126.2m in December 2024, recording an increase of 77.7%.
Main categories of exports of domestically produced goods for the period January-December 2025 (excl. stores and provisions for ships and aircraft), were mineral fuels and oils with a value of €2,331.4m, halloumi cheese with €356.9m and pharmaceutical products with €356.2m.
