Road safety remains one of the most significant public policy challenges for every modern state, with direct social and economic consequences.
Despite notable improvements in vehicles and infrastructure in recent years, road accidents continue to claim lives while placing a considerable burden on healthcare systems and national economies. The need for a coherent, long-term and evidence-based strategy is therefore more pressing than ever.
Cyprus has placed road safety at the forefront of its national priorities, adopting a multidimensional approach that combines policy initiatives, infrastructure upgrades and the use of modern technologies. This direction aims not only to reduce road collisions and casualties but also to cultivate a new culture of responsibility and prevention among all road users.
As part of the Harm Reduction Conference 2026, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works of the Republic of Cyprus, Alexis Vafeades, will deliver a presentation titled “The National Road Safety Strategy of Cyprus: Policy, Infrastructure & Technology.”
His address will highlight how clear policy direction, safer infrastructure and the use of data and modern vehicle systems can accelerate progress in preventing collisions, reducing fatalities and protecting drivers, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of “smart” technologies, ranging from advanced driver assistance systems to the use of analytical data for identifying high-risk locations and enabling targeted interventions.
At the same time, the presentation will outline the infrastructure and regulatory initiatives that are strengthening the effectiveness of Cyprus’ national road safety strategy.
Alexis Vafeades has served as Minister of Transport, Communications and Works since 2023, bringing more than thirty years of professional experience in architecture, construction and public policy. Prior to his appointment, he played a pivotal role in modernising construction contract standards as Chairman of the Cyprus Joint Construction Contracts Tribunal (CyJCCT), introducing updated contract frameworks aligned with the evolving needs of the sector.
His board-level experience includes service with Demetra Holdings Plc, the Registration and Control Board for Building and Technical Works Contractors, and the Cyprus Architects Association. He began his professional career in 1988 as a partner in the family architectural practice and has been a long-standing member of the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK). He holds a degree in Architecture from the University of Southern California (USC).
