Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Michael Damianos attended the 2nd Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris, representing the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.
According to a statement, in his intervention on 10 March, Damianos noted that all EU Member States agree on the need to work together to build an energy system that is secure, affordable, and capable of supporting the Union's competitiveness and climate goals.
It is added that Damianos also said that the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union is working tirelessly to achieve substantive results on all legislative proposals and other initiatives on the Union's agenda, while stressing the need to respect the specificities of Member States and their right to determine their national energy mix.
With the aim of achieving energy security and diversification of sources in the EU, this can be achieved, he explained, through a combination of renewable sources and nuclear energy, for which, however, peaceful use must be ensured, with full transparency and high safety standards, while also pointing out the need for investment in infrastructure, flexible networks, and staff training so that the Energy Union is effective, sustainable, and capable of supporting industrial competitiveness and affordable energy for all citizens.
It is added that in the afternoon, the Energy Minister held separate meetings with senior executives of TotalEnergies and representatives of the consulting firm Beicip-Franlab, while in the evening, he attended a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron for the participants of the Nuclear Energy Summit.
Damianos returns to Cyprus on Wednesday, 11 March, the statement concludes.
