"You are not alone," Metsola tells Cypriots (video)

"You are not alone and will never be alone," European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has said,  addressing the Cypriot people.

Referring to developments and the turbulent situation in the Middle East from the floor of the institution's plenary session in Strasbourg on the evening of 9 March, Metsola said, "I also know that Cypriots are concerned, and I want to be clear: you are not and will never be alone."

"European solidarity is real, tangible, and on your side. We will send the clearest message that Europe remains steadfast and united. The security of Cyprus is the security of the European Union," she added.

The President of the European Parliament also stressed that any attack against European targets or Member States is totally unacceptable and "when our resolve is tested, we will see what we are seeing now, Europe acting as one."

Metsola added that the European Union's thoughts are with those who have suffered, "who have endured decades of darkness and all those who have suffered from the regime's actions."

"We think of the mothers who searched among the corpses, the political prisoners who were unjustly imprisoned, those who were tortured, those who were hanged, those who suffered for their lives, their freedom, their women," she said.

She also condemned the attack outside a synagogue in the city of Liège in Belgium, sending a message to combat anti-Semitism and emphasising that Europe is a place where Jews can live without fear.
