Germany's Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, is visiting Nicosia and is expected to convey EU's and Germany's solidarity to Cyprus during a meeting he will have on the morning of Tuesday, 10 March with his counterpart Constantinos Kombos.
The German Foreign Minister will have a private meeting with Kombos, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This will be followed by bilateral consultations and statements to the media.
The German News Agency (DPA) has reported that Wadephul will also meet with the UAE Foreign Minister, Abdullah Bin Zayed, in Cyprus.
A spokesperson of the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin said in a statement on Monday, 9 March, and referring to Cyprus, that “we share at this moment a special solidarity for our EU partner."
It is expected that Kombos and Wadephul will discuss the Middle East and the Cyprus EU Presidency thoroughly during their meeting.
On Monday, 9 March Greek Premier, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and French President, Emmanuel Macron, were in Cyprus for talks with President Christodoulides.
In the early hours of 2 March, a Shahed-type drone struck military facilities in the British Bases, hosted in Akrotiri, in the southern tip of Cyprus, causing minor damage, amid regional turmoil following the US-Israeli attacks on Iran. The attack by the Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicle, believed to be linked to Hezbollah operating in Lebanon, prompted heightened security measures, while several countries, including Greece and France said they were deploying warships, aircraft and other air defence assets to shield Cyprus. The UK also announced the dispatch of a warship. Nicosia has reiterated in several occasions that it has no involvement in the wider Middle East conflict.
