Electric passenger cars in Cyprus at 0.51% in 2024, according to Eurostat

The European Statistical Office (Eurostat) has published data on the distribution of vehicles across the European Union at regional level for the year 2024 and, according to the data, Cyprus records a share of 0.51% electric passenger cars out of the total number of passenger vehicles.

At the same time, Cyprus is included among the 15 EU regions with the highest share of utility vehicles, with around 17% of all vehicles.

According to the statistical service, in 2024 the highest shares of electric passenger cars were recorded in the northern regions of the European Union. As in 2023, the region of Flevoland in the Netherlands maintained the leading position with 22.1%, marking an increase of 5 percentage points compared with the previous year. It is followed by Stockholm in Sweden (14.4%), the Capital Region of Denmark (13.3%), Prov. Vlaams-Brabant in Belgium (12.9%), and Midtjylland in Denmark (12.6%).

In addition, four more regions exceed 10%: Sjælland (11.6%), the Region of Southern Denmark (11.0%), and Nordjylland (10.2%) in Denmark, as well as Utrecht in the Netherlands (10.7%).

Eurostat underlined that the distribution of electric passenger vehicles shows strong geographical differences, with northern and central EU regions recording higher shares, while southern regions remain at lower levels.

Utility vehicles

Regarding utility vehicles, which include lorries, road tractors and special vehicles (excluding trailers and semi-trailers), their distribution is more balanced across the EU.

According to Eurostat, among the 15 regions with the highest shares of utility vehicles in 2024, Valle d’Aosta in Italy leads with 22.0%. The statistical office noted that this is partly explained by the region’s location at the border with Switzerland and France, making it a key European freight transport corridor. It is followed by Prov. West-Vlaanderen in Belgium (20.5%), as well as the Northern and Western region in Ireland and Guyane in France, both with 20.0%.

The top 15 regions also include four regions in Finland, three in Belgium, two in Spain, and one each in Ireland and Cyprus, with the latter recording around 17%.

Factors affecting the distribution

Eurostat noted that the share of utility vehicles depends on several factors. As highlighted, an important role is played by regional transport systems and infrastructure, such as the capacity of motorways, railway lines, ports and airports, as well as the economic characteristics of each region, including whether the local economy is dominated by manufacturing industries or services and whether the region is located along major European freight transport corridors.
