The British Bases of Akrotiri were on full alert after midnight, following an explosion on the airstrip, which appears to have been caused by a military drone.
A resident of the area told CNA that an explosion was heard and then aircraft took off from the British Bases, while the Base Police proceeded to cut off the roads leading to Akrotiri.
Residents of the Akrotiri municipal district abandoned their homes, with some of them spending the night at the Limassol military recruitment centre, following instructions from the President of the Republic, Kourion Mayor Pantelis Georgiou told CNA.
The British Bases did not comment on the incident, referring to the Press Office of the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom.
